Westchester Homebrewers Organization Shines at Captain Lawrence Brewing Co’s 1st Annual Fun in the Fall Beer Festival

This past Saturday, November 16, 2024, craft beer enthusiasts gathered at Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. in Elmsford, NY for their 1st Annual Fun in the Fall Beer Festival. Among the diverse array of breweries showcasing their finest brews, the Westchester Homebrewers Organization (WHO) proudly represented as the county’s longest-standing homebrew club. With not only a passion for brewing but also an impressive lineup of club-brewed beers, WHO made waves at this daylong event.

Members Scott Hirsch, Ken Hettinger, Cesar Recca, and I were on hand to pour our brews, which were met with high praise from festival-goers who continuously asked “Where’s your brick and mortar?” We would then reiterate that we’re home brewers. It was great to share the spotlight with other distinguished local breweries, including Industrial Arts Brewing Co., Plan B, Duncan’s Abbey, The Bronx Brewery, and Newburgh Brewing.

One of the standout offerings was Scott’s Oktoberfest Märzen, a true celebration of tradition and crafts. Brewed with 100% Munich malt and Hallertauer hops, this beer captivated attendees with its deep golden hue and rich, malty profile. The use of a decoction mash lent a robust maltiness reminiscent of classic Bavarian beers, making it a perfect autumnal choice.

Ken showcased his refreshing Happy Elephant Jasmine Rice Beer, which brought a contemporary twist to the lager style. Crisp and clean, this brew was a hit among guests looking for something light and invigorating during the festivities.

For those with a penchant for decadent flavors, Steven and Cesar presented their Pug Mug collaboration, “Stouterday Night.” Packing a punch at 12.6%, this imperial stout was an indulgent treat, crafted with roasted pistachios and cacao nibs for an unforgettable taste experience that left beer lovers buzzing. And nearly everyone commented on the Bogie-inspired pug label.

The festival was a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow beer aficionados and showcase the homebrewing skills that make the WHO special.
